A Resume of Writing In Business

Writing in business can and should be fun. You don’t have to be an expert to be a writer, but you should be passionate about the subject you have chosen, otherwise your readers will lose interest quickly and will likely only read the first paragraph of your work.

Gone are the days when lengthy sentences with big words was the norm. Today, businesses require shorter paragraphs, full of useful information that gets straight to the point. They expect a writer to have researched the subject thoroughly, cut out unnecessary jargon and have an article that flows and makes sense.

Equally, proofreading is essential, before releasing your final document, as we all make typos, it’s fair to say, but your reader will not see it that way, so you need to re-check your writing, if need be go for a walk then when you return refreshed, you’ll be more alert to mistakes.

Where possible read your work out loud and see if it makes sense and it was what you intended to write. Double check your spelling of names, titles and even gender (often “they” and “their” are more acceptable if unsure). When you have your finished copy, save it as a template, for possible future use.

Above all, be professional in your approach to writing in business, which does not mean formal, which should be reserved for legal or job application purposes. This brief guide will help you avoid most pitfalls and help you to enjoy your work.
